Thousands of festival goers, in what many are calling one of the most political Glastonbury Festivals ever, visited CND’s stalls to show their support for our campaign for a world without nuclear weapons.
The opening of this year’s festival coincided with the government’s announcement that it plans to buy 12 nuclear-capable F35A jets, in what is a major and worrying expansion of Britain’s nuclear weapons programme. Britain spends at least £12 billion a year on its nuclear weapons programme and the procurement of the F35 jets alone is expected to cost around £1 billion more. That’s £13 billion a year that could be spent on infrastructure and saving our public services.
The support for our campaign was clear, with our team engaging with new and long-time supporters about the need to get active with CND at our stalls in Green Futures and at the Pyramid stage – including to sign our Nurses not Nukes petition, which highlights the colossal waste of spending on nuclear weapons and the vital public services . If you would still like to sign, you can do so here.
Visitors to Green Futures could also take part in commemorating the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by attaching a message of peace to our hand-crafted cherry blossom tree (a massive thanks to Martin and Olivia at AWOL Outdoor Arts for their time and skills in bringing this creation to life!). These messages will be delivered to Japan by CND Vice-President Caroline Lucas in August – who also gave a powerful speech on behalf of CND from the Pyramid stage (watch on Instagram here and Facebook here). Meanwhile at Speakers Forum, CND Vice-President Rebecca Johnson spoke at a session on nuclear war.
A special thanks to the performers who gave their support to CND during the week: Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim), Rebecca Taylor (Self Esteem), Katy J Pearson, and Beans on Toast.
