Independent Greek MP Grigoris Lambrakis was on the Aldermaston March in 1963 and had planned a peace march from Marathon to Athens for April 1963, raising wider issues of peace and civil rights together. This was a controversial endeavour under what was then an oppressive Greek regime. Mass arrests at the beginning of the march prevented it from taking place, but Lambrakis, protected by parliamentary immunity, marched the route alone. The peace movement in Greece continued to grow, but a month later Lambrakis was murdered. His funeral was attended by at least half a million people and his gravestone was carved with a CND symbol. |
