60 Faces: Helen John

Helen John served as vice-chair of CND from 2001 until 2004. In September 1981, she had marched from Cardiff to Greenham Common and became one of the founders of the famous women’s peace camp there. She went on to set up another women’s peace camp – Womenwith Hill in North Yorkshire.

Helen supported direct action and was arrested several times. She stood for election as an independent against Tony Blair in 2001 and 2005, but missed the count on both occasions as she was in prison for protest-related charges.

One of her final direct action campaigns was an anti-drones protest at RAF Waddington in 2013.
