In 2016, he was named in the Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world.

He told CND the following when asked why he campaigns against nuclear weapons: ‘To my mind, Trident is an idea of the past. We have so many larger issues to deal with as our climate changes radically, it would be a disastrous waste of much needed funds to renew it. When would one ever use it? Pre-emptively? I hope not. After a nuclear attack? What would be the point?’
