On Saturday 28 February, Israel and the US launched another illegal attack on Iran, with airstrikes on the capital Tehran and other major cities across the country including Isfahan, Qom, Karaj, and Kermanshah.

CND has warned about the possibility of US-led military action on Iran for some weeks, exposing that Trump’s real objectives are for regime change.

Progress was being made on a new nuclear deal, according to Omani officials who had been mediating the talks between the US and Iran. Its Foreign Minister, Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, said only yesterday that “peace is within our reach,” and that Iran had agreed to degrade its current stockpiles of nuclear material to “the lowest level possible” so that it is “converted into fuel, and that fuel will be irreversible”. It had also agreed never to stockpile enriched uranium and to a “full and comprehensive verification” by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

It’s absolutely clear that the US had no intentions of securing a new deal and instead has unleashed a horrific bombardment of Iran.

These illegal attacks by the US and Israel are developing quickly into a wider regional conflict. Iran has already retaliated with attacks on Israel, a US Navy fleet based in Bahrain, and other bases in Kuwait, UAE, and Qatar. It is also clear that British bases have been used in the preparation for this attack. Government statements make clear that there is ongoing British military involvement.

This risks engulfing the entire Middle East in a devastating war, threatening the lives of hundreds of millions of people. We all remember the catastrophic consequences of the illegal US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq – a country half the size of Iran – which displaced millions and killed over half a million people.

We call for an end to the military aggression and attempts at regime change.

CND and Stop the War have called a protest for midday, Saturday 7 March in Central London. More details to follow.
