The New START Treaty, which puts limitations on US and Russian strategic nuclear weapons, expired on February 5th without a replacement in place. This represents a serious and dangerous step backwards for global arms control – there is now no limits at all on the world’s two largest nuclear arsenals.
We urge US President Trump to rethink his decision to reject Russian President Putin’s offer to extend the Treaty. Trump’s actions show he is intent on driving a new nuclear arms race. This threatens us all.
As a nuclear-armed state, Britain has clear obligations under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to pursue disarmament in good faith. Rather than sitting on the sidelines, the government could show leadership and use its diplomatic influence to call on the US administration to reconsider.
CND has written to David Riley, UK Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the Conference on Disarmament urging the government to use their influence to secure the extension of the Treaty.
