Between them Russia and the US possess over 90% of the world’s nukes. New START, which put limitations on US and Russian nuclear weapons, expired on 5 February without a replacement in place. This is a serious and dangerous step backwards for global arms control – there is now no limits at all on the world’s two largest nuclear arsenals. Amidst all the nuclear dangers in the world right now, we urge Russian President Putin and US President Trump to negotiate a new agreement, rather than drive a new nuclear arms race which threatens us all.
The protest heard from speakers highlighting the impact of the breakdown of the treaty – including on the climate and on international relations and the wider drive to war. CND supporters chanted ‘Putin, Trump, hear us say. Scrap your deadly nukes today!’ while handing out leaflets to inform passers-by of the threat of nuclear war exacerbated by the expiry of New START.
Before we left, CND handed in a letter to the Russian Embassy outlining our demands.
