CND calls on the British government and the US not to join Israel’s illegal war on Iran. This comes as reports that Keir Starmer chaired a Cobra meeting to discuss possibly joining military action if Donald Trump choses to do so.
The meeting comes as the government faces pressure to publish legal advice it sought about possible military action. Attorney General Richard Hermer has reportedly warned the government that joining Israel’s bombing campaign would be illegal. Starmer is also weighing up whether to allow the US to use its base at Diego Garcia to conduct air strikes. The US-operated base has seen a buildup of aircraft since Israel’s initial strikes last Friday.
CND General Secretary Sophie Bolt said:
“Starmer’s cabinet is discussing joining the US in a war against Iran. This risks dragging Britain into a disastrous war with other nuclear weapons states, that could result in a nuclear confrontation. The British government must step back from such catastrophic action. Starmer should instead be pushing for a ceasefire. Securing a diplomatic route is the only solution to ending this conflict.”
