The Ukraine war has already killed hundreds of thousands of people in Ukraine and Russia. The threat of an all-out military confrontation between the nuclear-armed military alliance of NATO and Russia puts the entire world at risk. Between them, they have around 11,000 nuclear weapons – some 100 times the power of the Hiroshima bomb.
We are deeply alarmed that Russia has threatened to use its nuclear weapons and lowered the threshold upon which it might use them. The US President, Donald Trump, has also stated that US nuclear submarines are being deployed in the region.
All efforts need to be focused on de-escalating the conflict and removing the risk of nuclear confrontation. All nuclear weapons across the region need to be withdrawn, including Russian nuclear weapons stationed in Belarus and US nuclear bombs stationed in Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Turkey and now in Britain. The stationing of these weapons only increases the risk of nuclear weapons being used and puts all the populations of these countries on the nuclear front line.
The US and Russia must make a clear commitment to reduce their nuclear weapons respecting the limits and inspections of the New Start Treaty and taking steps to renew this critical nuclear arms control agreement.
We support conscientious objectors on all sides of this conflict and condemn their persecution.
Escalating the war on Ukraine and intensifying military aggression has failed to bring an end to this horrific conflict. CND supports the calls of the European peace movement which urges a ‘common security’ approach – taking into consideration the security concerns of all countries in the region. This is where government efforts must be focused in order to bring about sustainable security for all.
Join CND’s calls for an end to conflict in Ukraine and an end to the threat of nuclear war.
