Today marks the 72nd anniversary of a UN General Assembly Resolution which established the United Nations Atomic Energy Commission (UNAEC). It was set up to ensure ‘the elimination from national armaments of atomic weapons and all other major weapons adaptable to mass destruction.’
Whilst the UNAEC was disbanded in 1952, new UN initiatives have sought to address the threat nuclear weapons pose. In July 2017 the UN launched a groundbreaking treaty to ban nuclear weapons. 122 countries backed the plans, and so far 56 countries have signed and 4 have ratified the treaty. It’s vital that citizens of the world ensure this initiative succeeds.
Please sign the Citizens’ Treaty to show your support for the global ban and to encourage the UK government to sign and ratify the treaty.
