CND has calculated that the government’s plan to build a new generation nuclear weapons system will end up costing at least £205 billion. This is an appalling waste of money. But the figure is expected to end up being even higher, with official bodies confirming the nuclear weapons programme is out of control and even ‘unachievable’.
The use of nuclear weapons would be illegal under almost every conceivable circumstance, as huge numbers of civilian casualties would be unavoidable. These immoral and deadly weapons do not make us safe. In fact, they put us in more danger.
Stopping the replacement of Trident, the UK’s current system, would mean we had the funds to invest billions in the NHS, improve our education system, enact climate change measures, and build new homes. At least £205 billion spent instead on the public good would have huge benefits for society and must be the path we take.
Getting rid of Britain’s nuclear weapons is CND’s priority. We want to see a world without nuclear weapons. Britain should lead the way and scrap these dangerous weapons for good.
