Join us today (Wed 9th May) outside the South Korean embassy between 2-5pm for a demonstration and candle-lit vigil in solidarity with the people of Gangjeong Village, Jeju Island.

The UNESCO World Heritage site is set to be destroyed by the construction of a South Korean naval base which is to be used by the US as a key part of their missile defence infrastructure.

The base will be used by the US to berth their Aegis missile defence ships and nuclear aircraft carriers. Mutual defence pacts mean that the US can utilise any South Korean port or airfield, and Barack Obama has identified the Asia-Pacific region as a central “pivot” in the global projection of US power and the protection of “US interests and investments”.

The villagers of Gangjeong have been resisting the destruction of their 450 year old village for five years, and the need for international solidarity has never been more acute.
