Support the nuclear ban treaty

Target: The UK government

The United Nations' Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) entered into force in January 2021. It makes it illegal under international law to develop, test, produce, manufacture, acquire, possess, stockpile, transfer, use, or threaten to use nuclear weapons.

The UK Government shamefully refuses to sign this treaty, instead pressing ahead with plans to upgrade its current nuclear weapons system, Trident. This is despite it being irrelevant to the security problems we face today and costing enormous sums of money that would be better on things that would actually help ordinary people.

Nine countries have nuclear weapons. Almost 200 do not. Britain must join the global majority by signing and ratifying the TPNW, and committing to cancelling the replacement of the UK's nuclear weapons system.

Add your name below to press the Government to support the nuclear ban treaty.

We, the undersigned, call on the government to:

- Sign and ratify the TPNW
- Commit to cancelling the replacement of Trident, Britain's nuclear weapons system

The UK's nuclear weapons system, Trident, is irrelevant in dealing with the security problems we face today. Resources should instead be invested in dealing with actual threats, such as pandemics and climate change.

The UK can sign the treaty while it still possess nuclear weapons, provided they are removed from operational status and a transition plan is in place for eventual disarmament. The government should sign the TPNW without hesitation, as part of its efforts towards global nuclear disarmament.
