George Farebrother joined CND in the early 1980s and soon became organiser of the local Hailsham group. He later joined the Sussex Peace Alliance as secretary and organised many vigils, stalls and meetings all over the country, being much in demand as a speaker for local groups. He was one of the instigators of the World Court Project, a world-wide campaign that resulted in an historic opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in July 1996. The ICJ ruled that the threat or use of nuclear weapons is generally illegal, and that states have an obligation to conclude negotiations on their elimination. George continued to work tirelessly until his death on promoting the criminality of nuclear weapons. |
