On Saturday, 11 May, CND groups held protests and stalls across the country in our latest series of actions opposing the return of US nuclear weapons to Britain.
This included a protest at RAF Lakenheath – the base currently undergoing construction works to prepare it for a new US nuclear mission. Here, East Anglian residents read out a statement, declaring Lakenheath a nuclear-free zone, and called on the British government to work towards global nuclear disarmament.
CND groups in London and the South East held a protest outside the US Embassy, with more actions in Manchester, Sheffield, Bradford, Wakefield, Swansea, and Bridgwater. We’d like to thank everyone who attended these actions for their support.
Campaigners will return to RAF Lakenheath this summer for an international peace camp, taking place from 13-25 July. We are also collecting signatures for a letter hand-in to Downing Street later this year. We will be calling on the Prime Minister to reject the stationing of US nuclear weapons anywhere in Britain, and to work to defuse international tensions in order to prevent nuclear war.
