The Welsh Senedd passed a motion on Wednesday calling on all states, including all nuclear-armed states, to sign and ratify the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).

The Plaid Cymru motion was one of several made as part of a debate on the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and passed with 26 in favour, 13 against, and 13 abstentions.

In acknowledgment that the conflict had led to an increased “risk of a nuclear war and the fear of nuclear war amongst people in Wales and beyond,” backing the treaty would “prevent such a threat” from being used in future.

Welcoming the announcement CND Cymru Vice-Chair Brian Jones said: “We welcome the Senedd’s support for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. As serious as the situation is in Ukraine, it will become infinitely worse if nuclear weapons are used. The only long-term way to prevent the use of nuclear weapons is through a worldwide ban on nuclear weapons.”
