The UK government has started work on building submarines for a new nuclear weapons system to replace the current one, Trident, with plans for new warheads also in motion.
CND has calculated that replacing Trident will end up costing at least £205 billion. This is an appalling waste of money. Cancelling Trident replacement would mean we could invest billions in the NHS, our education system or new homes.
Government plans to increase military spending up to 2.5% of GDP by 2027 will make the world far more dangerous and push millions more into greater poverty. Britain’s nuclear weapons programme accounts for 14% of the Ministry of Defence’s budget.
Any use of Britain’s nuclear weapons would result in huge numbers of civilian casualties plus environmental damage on a devastating scale. These weapons don’t keep us safe, they just make the current international situation more dangerous.
Stopping Britain from producing more nuclear weapons as well as getting rid of its current system is CND’s urgent priority. We want to see a world without nuclear weapons, and Britain must lead the way in scrapping Trident.
